MEET SYDNEY WINSTEAD (SHE/THEY)

Sydney Winstead, Resident in Counseling (she/they) is a pre-licensed clinician and graduated with a Masters of Mental Health Counseling from Wake Forest University and is also a National Certified Counselor by the NBCC. Sydney spent the first year of her residency working in the outpatient setting receiving training for trauma focused modalities such as Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure alongside working at a local college in their counseling center where she found her passion for working with young adults exploring their identity, family dynamics and trauma. As a black lesbian, women, she enjoys providing affirming therapy for folks that share her identities while also being aware of the impact of intersectionality and power in and out of the therapy room. 

Sydney’s main focus areas include trauma, complicated family dynamics, LGBTQ+ issues, identity exploration and OCD. Sydney has experience working with clients with symptoms of anxiety, depression, adjustment disorder, relationship issues and phase of life difficulties. 

Sydney utilizes a strengths based perspective with clients while also encouraging accountability and self compassion within clients. They use modalities such as ACT, CBT, DBT, and trauma focused modalities such as CPT and PE and more with clients. Sydney cares deeply about the therapeutic relationship and emphasizes a collaborative approach to therapy with the clients that encourages exploration and growth. 

In her free time, Sydney enjoys watching anime, visiting the aquarium/museums/zoo, going to concerts and spending time reading with her cats. 

Syndey is now taking in person and virtual individual clients in Arlington, VA. She is licensed in VA, and available for coaching in other states. While in her residency, she is supervised by SC Nealy, LPC.
