Dr. David Tierney (he/him/his) received his PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee and has been working in mental health for almost 10 years. He has been published academically numerous times on topics including sexual and gender minority health disparities, sexual identity work, transgender healthcare, organizational and structural barriers to treatment, and more. His doctoral dissertation focused on how beliefs about the origin of sexual orientation predict mental health outcomes, and he feels very passionate about incorporating one's identities into the therapeutic space.
Dr. Tierney specializes with couples and relationship counseling, male-identifying individuals, veterans and military members and families, neurodiverse individuals, those experiencing addiction or substance abuse, as well as PTSD and complex trauma cases. He has extensively trained in hospital systems and medical schools, and has a special interest in working with those with chronic medical issues (HIV and AIDS, cancer, neurological conditions, diabetes, and more). Likewise, David also has a passion for working with individuals, couples, and family members who are adjusting to a life limiting illness, as well as those who are currently grieving or experienced loss.
Dr. Tierney is currently taking new individuals and couples for counseling beginning mid-April 2025. Dr. Tierney is only virtual until Fall 2025 and then he will begin offering in person sessions in Arlington, VA for clients as well.
