Anthony Carbone’s (he/him/his) approach is person-centered and rooted in kindness, empathy, and a touch of humor. By combining curiosity, active listening, and evidence-based techniques, Anthony strives to create a safe and inviting space for clients to feel heard, valued, and understood.
Anthony is trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and uses IFS-informed models of therapy in order to help clients develop coping strategies and foster positive change. He is particularly passionate about social justice and meeting the needs of underserved populations. His work is strongly rooted in feminist ideology.
Anthony mostly works with adults and couples, with case by case adolescents. He has a passion for working with the LGBTQIA+ community with particular focus on trans-masculinity, AFAB experiences, and queer couples. Anthony also has experience providing services for neurodiversity affirming care, depression and anxiety, anger management, divorce, and stress/life transitions.
Anthony has earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Southern Maine. Additionally, he has a Master’s degree in Gender Studies from Rutgers University and continues to work at Rutgers University as an Adjunct Professor.
Personally, Anthony identifies as a trans man, lives in Maryland with his partner, and is an incredible vegan baker in his spare time. He is currently licensed in the state of Virginia as a Resident Counselor and in Maryland as an LGPC. He will begin accepting new clients in person on January 2, 2025 in Arlington, VA or virtually in Virginia and Maryland.
Transmasculine individuals and identities are often those who were assigned female at birth, but their gender identity and/or expression are masculine, though not always male-identifying. Transmasc individuals are often overlooked in society tends to have a binary view of gender, and Anthony loves to work with clients in figuring out how to best express themselves in ways that feel authentic, empowering, and joyful.
Feminist therapy focuses on the challenges that AFAB individuals face as a result of bias, stereotyping, oppression, discrimination, and other factors, and how those stressors can negatively affect their mental health. It is based on the belief that wellness is inextricably linked to an individual’s social and cultural identities and the political environment in which they live. Anthony is passionate about working with AFAB individuals to address these factors head on and empower themselves in their lives.
Anthony has a passion for working with couples and partnerships on building healthy communication, maintaining or repairing trust, and creating a framework for safety and love in the home. Utilizing IFS and attachment focused methods, Anthony wants to make sure everyone in the partnership feels heard and learns to express their needs and wants in health, adaptable ways.
